Position Overview
The Cinematographer will help capture visually stunning, story-driven documentary content across domestic and international productions. This role requires someone who can operate independently, work efficiently with limited gear and crew support, and consistently deliver cinematic imagery in fast-moving real-world environments.
This is not a traditional studio production role. The ideal candidate is highly adaptable, technically skilled, emotionally intuitive, and able to create beautiful visuals in difficult or uncontrolled settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Capture cinematic documentary footage in international and domestic environments
- Operate confidently in fast-paced, unpredictable field conditions
- Light interviews and environments using minimal equipment and small-footprint setups
- Shoot handheld, run-and-gun, vérité, and interview-driven content with strong composition and storytelling instincts
- Collaborate closely with producers, directors, editors, and clients
- Maintain visual consistency and cinematic quality across projects
- Make quick creative and technical decisions in dynamic environments
- Adapt to cultural sensitivities and challenging logistical conditions while maintaining professionalism
- Willingness to travel up to 40-60% of the time, often on short notice and for extended periods
- Manage camera, audio, lighting, and media workflows in the field
Required Qualifications
- Strong documentary cinematography experience
- Demonstrated ability to shoot cinematic visuals with limited crew and gear
- Proficiency with professional cinema cameras and mirrorless systems
- Deep understanding of natural light, practical lighting, and lightweight interview setups
- Ability to operate efficiently as a one-person or two-person crew
- Strong handheld camera operating skills
- Experience shooting in international or cross-cultural environments
- Knowledge of audio fundamentals for documentary production
- Strong organizational and media management skills
- Valid passport and willingness to travel internationally
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience filming humanitarian, nonprofit, faith-based, or mission-driven stories
- Drone operation experience
- Color grading and post-production familiarity
- Experience producing or directing documentary content
- Wilderness, remote travel, or hostile-environment production experience
- Ability to conduct interviews or build rapport with subjects in the field
